Some Facts about Sandalwood
Many people mistaken any wood with fragrance is called Sandalwood. As such, there are many imitations in the market nowadays, two famous example of which are the Buddha Wood and Quandong. Only the SANTALUM Species trees (eg Santalum Album, Santalum Lanceolatum, Santalum Spicatum etc) are internationally recognized as REAL SANDALWOOD and can produce Sandalwood, whose oil are extensively used as base oil / fixture in many cosmetics and perfumery products.
Sandalwood is an essential ingredient commonly used within the incense industry due to its great fragrance. In the process of making incense, the first step is usually to grind the Sandalwood into fine powder form before using it. Sandalwood is also easier to transport around in powder form than in wood form. Thus more often than not, the majority of Sandalwood found in the market are usually in powder form. This means it is now very rare and difficult to find Sandalwood in original Blocks Logs form nowadays.
Sandalwood is now a rare tree in this world due to the rapidly diminishing numbers of the Santalum trees in their natural habitat in Asia. Used to be commonly found throughout Asia especially India and Indonesia, its population has declined rapidly due to its much-sought heavenly-like fragrance in the past 2 centuries. In India, for instance, it has been used extensively in household products such as soap, detegent, shampoo, facial creams etc due to its good antiseptic puritying powers. In temples, it is also used extensively as beams/pillars, and during special religion ceremonies, its powder is mixed with sandalwood oil to be blessed and then applied a little on the forehead of the followers. Also due to its strong fixing properties, Sandalwood Oil has also been used as a base oil in top grade perfumes. Last but not least, sandalwood oil is also very suitable to be used in aromatherapy areas due to its aphrodisiac properties that reduces fears & makes one more relaxed.
